Truck driver escapes after causing nasty accident on Kampala-Mityana highway

Two people have died and 11 others injured in an accident involving a trailer registration number UAY 632J and a Toyota mini van number UBS665H along the Kampala-Mityana highway.

Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesman, Luke Owoyesigyire, says the accident occurred when the driver of the van tried to overtake a Raum and rammed into a speeding trailer at Kiweesi village in Buloba, Wakiso District.

Owoyesigyire identifies the deceased as Godfrey Ndaula, the driver of the van and his co-driver, only identified as Ssempala. four of the injured have been identified as Gerald Mulindwa, Oliva Nantambi, Margret Nakanjako, Jackie Nakalema.

Police says the truck driver escaped from the accident scene and is still at large.

A total of 2,546 CCTV cameras have so far been installed in Kampala metropolitan area in a bid to fight crime in the city and major high ways.

This was revealed by the police spokesperson Fred Enanga while addressing the press on the progress of phase one of the national CCTV camera project.

The targeted number of cameras is 3,233

Out of those already installed 1,565 are online and active.

After completion of the first phase, Enanga says the police are going to engage people in the private sector that have installed CCTV cameras at their premises to link them to the national CCTV system in order to improve police’s response to crimes in those respective neighborhoods.
