Sad news coming from Rukungiri District indicates that three premature babies have died at Kisizi Hospital, in Rukungiri District, due to a power blackout that was caused by flooding.

Rev Joshua Bwebale, the hospital’s chaplain explained that the babies were on oxygen support in the nursery, which is supported by electricity.

Heavy rains over the weekend submerged the hospital wards

On Sunday and Monday, Taxi drivers and residents say they fear they could be swept away by the volume of water that had covered the road linking the biggest hospital in the area. The hospital is approximately 42 kilometres south of Rukungiri, where the district headquarters are located.

Speaking to local media, Kate Rwomushana, the In-charge nurse said the rains that started on Saturday night forced them to move patients to the stairs after all their beds were submerged.

Dr. Francis Banya the gynecologist says their biggest challenge now is the lack of running water as all water pipes were destroyed by the rains.
